Large adaptations

Major adaptations usually involve a larger alteration to your home such as removing the bath and installing a level access shower. To complete this type of work, funding will be required through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) which is means tested. The starting point in applying for a DFG is an assessment by an Occupational Therapist. This is arranged through Social Services and they will visit you at home to assess your needs and agree options.

We can help by acting on your behalf with the local authority and oversee the whole process from start to finish. We will work with the local authority with the aim of completing the adaptation within 9 months from when you first contact us.

Examples of large adaptations include; wet floor showers, extensions, stair lifts and access ramps.

You’ll probably have lots of questions, here are some of the most common ones we get asked.

• Will I have to Pay?

  If you need a large adaptation to your home, you may be eligible for a Disabled Facilities grant (DFG) to help with any costs. This is paid by your local authority.

  To be deemed eligible for this you will have to complete a means test which is carried out by an Occupational Therapist from your local authority.

• What help will I get from Alliance Homes?

  We have a dedicated team providing design through to site management services. To help you when you are having your home adapted Alliance Homes will act as your agent to help you get any grant that may be necessary and oversee the work on site. If there is a contribution for you to pay we will work with North Somerset Care & Repair to help you look for charitable funding.

• I don’t think I could cope with the disturbance!

  If you would like to move out of your property while the work is done and have nowhere to go, we have a dedicated property in Cleeve. This bungalow is designed to be accessible and is equipped with all the furniture that you will need for a short stay.

• How long will the work take?

  Timescales will vary as no one adaptation is the same. To give you some idea of timescale, an average shower adaptation will take approximately 10 working days to complete from when we start the work in your home.

• What choice will I be given?

  Each large adaptation will be designed with you and your Occupational Therapist. We will agree the layout which will best meet your needs and give you choices of decoration colours.
