The Government have now confirmed their intention to cut £20 a week from Universal credit in October. That's £1,040 a year. Alliance Homes is getting behind The Joseph Rowntree Foundation's campaign to encourage the Government to do the right thing and #KeepTheLifeline.
At the start of the pandemic the Government took the bold decision to uplift the standard allowance in Universal Credit and the basic element in Working Tax Credit by £20 per week. This will come to an end and recipients of these benefits will see their income severely cut.
The decision to increase UC and WTC by £20 per week was the right thing to do at the start of the pandemic and it is the right thing to do now. Rather than cutting families adrift, the Government should make the uplift to UC and WTC permanent and extend this same support to those on legacy benefits.
