Alliance Homes Launches Community Micro-Grants with New Planter for Pill

Alliance Homes launched its new Community Micro-Grants scheme this week. Community Micro-Grants are a new initiative which aims to provide funds of up to £1,000 for local groups and charities who have ideas to help their communities become more vibrant and help people to live independent lives.

The first recipient is Pill in Bloom who have been given a grant for a new planter in Pill’s Baltic Place precinct.

Alliance Homes’ Chief Executive Louise Swain joined in with Lucy Byrne from Pill in Bloom as well as Cub Scouts Zac, Mya and Ben from the 1st Crockerne group who were completing the planter with a touch of colour.

The new planter was the idea of a community group who wanted a way to celebrate and recognise people who had volunteered during the pandemic. To make their idea happen, the group applied to Alliance Homes, their local social housing landlord and owner of Baltic Place, for a Community Micro-Grant.

The group’s request met Alliance Homes’ aims of making areas more vibrant, providing positive benefits to the community and helping people live independent lives. Alliance not only provided the planter but also the compost and a little know how from their resident gardening expert.

Louise commented: “Community Micro-Grants are a fantastic way for people in our communities who’ve got ideas for making improvements to actually make them happen.

This planter is a great example of what can be achieved and with local people looking after it, I look forward to seeing it in bloom over many years to come.”

Lucy Byrne commented: “I’m really proud of how the community have come together to make this happen and I feel it really shows our thanks for all the people in the area who volunteer. Our team, including Jenny Calwell and Aileen Edwards, have been fundraising for the herbs and flowers that have gone into the planter and we’re hoping to raise more money for another one so we can continue with our plans to ‘green’ the precinct.”

Groups and charities can apply for Micro-Grants via the Alliance Homes website www.alliancehomes.org.uk/micro-grants.
